Update On-Prem Qt License Server

The following steps describe how to update On-Prem Qt License Server from version 3.x.x to the latest version.

  1. Prerequisites:
    • Obtain the latest Qt License Server binary package.
    • Obtain the updated qt-license-server.service file.
    • Ensure that you have sudo/root access to the license server.
    • Set QLS_MAX_QUEUE_SIZE to the maximum recommended value of 100000 for the grid system.
    • We recommend keeping all other configuration settings as their default values in the configuration file.
  2. Verify the current service status:
    sudo systemctl status qt-license-server.service

Check which version is currently installed:

    ./qt-license-server version
  3. Stop the current Qt License Server:
    sudo systemctl stop qt-license-server

    Verify that it has stopped:

    sudo systemctl status qt-license-server.service
  4. Back up the current installation:
    cd /opt/qt-license-server/
    mkdir -p ~/backup-qls
    cp qt-license-server ~/backup-qls/
    sudo cp /etc/systemd/system/qt-license-server.service ~/backup-qls/
  5. Back up the current database files (data.sqlite, data.sqlite-wal, and data.sqlite-shm) and logs. If you haven't specified a custom path for logs, the default paths are:
    • database: /opt/qt-license-server
    • logs: /opt/qt-license-server/logs
  6. Replace the Qt License Server binary:
    sudo cp <path-to-downloaded-QLS>/qt-license-server /opt/qt-license-server/
    sudo chmod +x /opt/qt-license-server/qt-license-server
    ls -l /opt/qt-license-server/qt-license-server
  7. Update the systemd service configuration. Merge the supplied qt-license-server.service file with the existing deployment configuration, preserving any environment-specific or custom values, especially QLS_PORT, QLS_ENABLE_SSL, and QLS_LOG_LEVEL. Then copy the updated service file and reload systemd:
    sudo cp <path-to-downloaded-QLS>/qt-license-server.service /etc/systemd/system/qt-license-server.service
    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
  8. Start the service:
    sudo systemctl start qt-license-server.service
    sudo systemctl enable qt-license-server.service
    sudo systemctl status qt-license-server.service
  9. Validate server connectivity:
    curl -v http://localhost:8080/
    curl -v http://127.0.0.1:8080/

    Alternatively:

sudo ss -tlnp | grep 8080
sudo netstat -tlnp | grep 8080

Replace 8080 with the configured QLS_PORT value if your deployment uses a different port.

  10. Monitor server logs. Follow the service logs in real time:
    journalctl -u qt-license-server -f

Or display the last 100 log entries:

    journalctl -u qt-license-server -n 100
  1. Prerequisites:
    • Obtain the latest Qt License Server binary package.
    • Check the latest qt-service.xml file for the newly introduced configuration options.
    • Ensure you have admin rights to install the license server.
    • We recommend keeping all other configuration settings as their default values in the configuration file.
  2. Stop the current Qt License Server:
    qt-service.exe stop
  3. Verify that Qt License Server has stopped:
    qt-service.exe status
  4. Back up the current database files (data.sqlite, data.sqlite-wal, and data.sqlite-shm) and logs. If you haven't specified a custom path for logs, the default paths are:
    • database: <QtSDK>\LicenseManagementTools\QtLicenseServer\<version>\LicenseService\<platform>
    • logs: <QtSDK>\LicenseManagementTools\QtLicenseServer\<version>\LicenseService\<platform>\logs
  5. Uninstall the current Qt License Server.
    qt-service.exe uninstall
  6. Update the Qt License Server configuration: Merge the supplied qt-service.xml file with the existing deployment configuration, preserving any environment-specific or custom values, especially QLS_PORT, QLS_ENABLE_SSL, and QLS_LOG_LEVEL.
  7. Check the Qt License Server version.
    qt-license-server.exe version
  8. Install the new Qt License Server version:
    qt-service.exe install
  9. Copy the backed-up database files to the new Qt License Server version directory.
  10. Start the server with the new qt-service.xml configuration file with migrated settings:
    qt-service.exe start
  1. Re-register the licenses.
  1. Verify that the installed Qt License Server version is running:
    qt-service.exe status
