What an AI can do in Clate
The built-in assistant and other AI tools that connect to Clate use the same set of design tools. This page lists what those tools can create, change, and read.
Read the project
An AI can read:
- the pages of the project and the layers on each page
- the objects below a layer, with the settings they have
- the selection on the canvas, which is how it understands "this"
- the active page
- the list of image assets
- rendered pictures of an object, and the picture of an image asset, to check how things look
Create and change objects
Clate applies every set of changes an AI sends in one step. Either everything succeeds, or nothing changes. In the undo history, one set of changes is one step.
An AI can:
- create pages
- create frames, rectangles, ellipses, polygons, stars, text, and images, also inside frames and with a gradient fill in the same step
- remove, move, reorder, and rename objects
- change settings of objects
- turn an object into a frame
- add, replace, rename, and remove image assets
Settings an AI can change
| Object | Settings |
|---|---|
| All objects | Position (x, y), size, z, visible, opacity, rotation |
| Shapes | fillColor, strokeColor, strokeWidth, fillGradient, the corner radius settings |
| Ellipse | startAngle, sweepAngle, innerArcRatio |
| Polygon | sideCount |
| Star | pointCount, ratio |
| Text | text, color, horizontalAlignment, verticalAlignment, font.pixelSize, font.weight, font.letterSpacing, font.wordSpacing |
| Image | source, which is one of your assets |
| Gradients | The points of linear, radial, and conical gradients, and for every color stop its position and color |
An image always uses an asset from your project. An AI cannot point an image at a web address or a file on its own. It first adds the image as an asset.
Assets must be PNG, JPEG, SVG, or WebP images of up to 31 MiB.
What is out of reach
An AI cannot:
- change font families, dashed lines, line caps, joins, text wrapping, or other settings that are not in the list above
- open or switch projects, or change the selection
- undo or redo changes (you do that with
Ctrl+ZandCtrl+Y) - export to QML
When you ask for something that is out of reach, a well-behaved AI says so.
If Clate rejects a change
Clate rejects a change when it does not fit, and then applies none of the changes in that set. For example, when the AI:
- asks for an object type that Clate cannot create
- asks for a setting that it cannot change
- deletes an object that something else still refers to
- removes an asset that is still in use
The AI sees the reason, and can try again.
