FAQ and troubleshooting

Short answers to common questions.

Projects​

Do I need to save?​

No. Clate saves your project continuously. See Projects and saving.

How do I move a project to another computer?​

Right-click the project card on the Welcome page and choose Save Local Copy. Copy the file to the other computer, and choose Import Project there. See Import a project.

How do I import a project?​

Click Import Project on the Welcome page and select a .clate file. Clate adds a copy as a new project card. It does not open the project and never replaces an existing project. See Import a project.

Where are my projects?​

In the Clate folder inside your Documents folder. Manage them from the Welcome page.

Drawing and editing​

Why does my new shape have a black outline?​

Every new shape starts with a thin black outline. Set the stroke Width to 0 in the Stroke section to remove it. See Fill and stroke.

How do I select an object inside a frame?​

Double-click the frame to go one level deeper, hold Ctrl while you click to select the innermost object, or select the object in the Layers panel. See Selecting objects.

How do I duplicate an object?​

Copy it with Ctrl + C and paste it with Ctrl + V. There is no separate Duplicate command for objects. See Copy, paste, and duplicate.

Where did Bring to Front put my object?​

Bring to Front and Send to Back work on the whole page, so an object inside a frame moves out of the frame. To change the order inside a frame, drag the layer in the Layers panel. See Pages and layers.

How do I edit text?​

Select the text object and type in the text field in the Typography section of the property editor. See Text and typography.

Can I change the keyboard shortcuts?​

No. See Keyboard shortcuts for the shortcuts that Clate uses.

How do I undo?​

Press Ctrl + Z, or choose Undo in the Edit submenu of the main menu. Press Ctrl + Y to redo.

Export and preview​

Nothing happened after I exported​

Clate does not show a message when an export is finished. Open the folder that you chose to see the files. See Export to QML.

Why are there old files in my export folder?​

Clate overwrites files with the same name but never deletes files. Export into an empty folder.

Why does a setting of my design not appear in the QML?​

Clate leaves out settings that it cannot express in QML, without a message.

Preview does not open​

Preview shows the selected layer. With nothing selected it shows the first layer of the page, and an empty page has nothing to show. Draw something or select a layer, and click Preview again. See Preview.

AI Assistant​

The assistant button is dimmed​

Open a project. The assistant needs an open project.

The assistant cannot see my project​

Check that the MCP server is on: Settings › Enable MCP Server in the menu on the Welcome page. See The MCP server.

How do I undo what the assistant did?​

Press Ctrl + Z. See Using the assistant.
